Schooling the Viscount is a charming, sexy romp through the English countryside. Readers will fall in love with the little town of Puddling-on-the-Wold. I did!” —Vanessa Kelly, USA Today bestselling author

Welcome to Puddling‑on‑the‑Wold, where the sons and daughters of Victorian nobility come for a little rest, recuperation, and “rehab,” in this brand-new series of rebellious romance from Maggie Robinson.

After a harrowing tour of duty abroad, Captain Lord Henry Challoner fought to keep his memories at bay with two of his preferred vices liquor and ladies. But the gin did more harm than good—as did Henry’s romantic entanglements, since he was supposed to be finding a suitable bride. Next stop The tiny village of Gloucestershire, where Henry can finally sober up without distraction or temptation. Or so he thinks…

A simple country schoolteacher, Rachel Everett was never meant to cross paths with a gentleman such as Henry. What could such a worldly man ever see in her? As it turns out, everything. Beautiful, fiercely intelligent Rachel is Henry’s dream woman—and wife. Such a match would be scandalous for his family of course, and Rachel has no business meddling with a resident at the famed, rather draconian, Puddling Rehabilitation Foundation. All the better, for two lost souls with nothing to lose—and oh so very much to gain.

This is not great literature, it's not especially historical, there is anachronistic language and behavior, it's fanciful, funny and frivolous mostly, yet there are a few serious issues lightly touched on. I may never read this again, but it certainly hit the spot at this moment in my life. The writing is easy breezy, humorous and clever at times, the characters quirky and charming, the hero very lovable and the heroine quite admirable, and this was such a feel-good read for me that I've given it a 4-star rating.

There you have it. I don't mean to sound gushy about this. I was just happy to read something upbeat and cute and well written, with no villains and no big misunderstandings or failures to communicate or annoying characters. There is a minor misunderstanding near the end but it's not exactly the characters' fault and it doesn't last long.

It's 1881 in Puddling-on-the-Wold, a little village in Gloucestershire. The village has served for some years now as a sanatorium of sorts for members of the ton, who send their "troubled" relatives there for rehabilitation from problems such as addictions to drugs or drink, overeating, overindulgence in sexual activity, etc. Our hero describes the village as "a charming, open-air jail" with all the villagers as "coppers". Only one troubled soul is rehabilitated at a time and at the moment it's 25-year-old Captain Lord Henry Challoner, six years a soldier and now back from the Boer Wars, deaf in one ear and with one badly-damaged foot. Henry has been trying to forget the horrors of war with too much drinking and too much womanizing and his father has had enough.

Diagnosed as a "sexual deviant" also addicted to spirits and drugs, Henry is only allowed to walk around restricted areas of the village. There are no pubs or alcohol to be found anywhere and, apparently, no women under the age of 50. Henry, as is the case with all the patients sent to Puddling, must stay for a minimum of 28 days, which may be extended if the"cure" doesn't take. He spends his days with an unvarying schedule. Tea and talk with the vicar, work in the little garden of his cottage, and walks in the restricted area.

Well, one day Henry wanders off his beaten path and comes upon the schoolhouse, complete with children and lovely 23-year-old schoolteacher Rachel Everett. Henry is not supposed to be there. She chastises him. He's thrilled to see such a vision of loveliness. And the story is off and running.

By the 10% mark Henry has proposed marriage to Rachel for the first time: "Will you marry me, Miss Everett, so I can get the hell out of here?" Rachel, of course, doesn't take him seriously, although he continues to propose often. "Why?" she wants to know. "Why not?" he answers. "We are both healthy young adults." This is followed by other reasons as the story progresses, such as "I have to marry somebody. Why not you?" Of course that's not good enough for Rachel. Nor are the answers "You're very soothing to be around" or "You, ah, stimulate me." Eventually, don't worry, he'll get it right.

There's strong chemistry between the two and it's a sweet, yet sexy, romance. There's even a cute secondary romance for the vicar. This isn't a book to read to learn anything. It's one for enjoyment and relaxation.

Schooling the Viscount Cotswold Confidential Book 1 edition by Maggie Robinson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I liked Henry. I had as much sympathy for him as Rachel does. Having gone a little wild after recently returning from the Boer War with injuries, he is struggling to readjust to civilian life while pleasing his father and going along with Puddling's weird restrictions. Rachel is immediately attracted to his charm and good looks but can't believe a viscount really wants to marry a school teacher.

The four stars are for all the times the author made me laugh, which is rare for me.

As with the other book, I have a hard time accepting the kooky village. All the young women in the village are supposed to hide for the first two weeks he's there? They close the bakery while a "guest" is staying there to lose weight? It's cartoon-like, which makes the hot sex scenes come as a shock at first.

I do not know the author, and I paid full price for the book (after reading another book in the series).
Lord Henry Challoner has been sent to the bucolic village of Puddling-on-the-Wold because his father wants him to stop drinking and chasing women after his return from the Boer War. He's on a strict regimen that goes astray when he meets the lovely Rachel Everett who is also the local schoolteacher. Right from the start, Henry sees something in Rachel that he knows will help him deal with the effects of war. He proposes, but she turns him down no matter how charming he is.
The resulting chase makes for a charming story. Rachel and Henry are made for each other. The secondary characters come to life under Ms. Robinson's deft pen and add a lot of extra fun to the book. The beautiful Cotswold scenery is the perfect setting for this delightful book.
If you are already a fan of Maggie Robinson, you'll love this book. If not, read it and you will become one. Lord Henry and Rachel Everett are a great match in this historical, set in a fictional "Puddling on the Wold" which in itself fun to say. The war-scarred Henry is sent to this village, which "rehabilitates" nobility of the disreputable sort, by his father who fears Henry's behavior is causing shame to the family. Rachel takes care of her aged father and is schoolmistress in the local school, but she has dreams of exploring the wider world. Ms. Robinson always does a magnificent job of making her characters—especially male leads—incredibly nuanced and layered. They have vulnerabilities and strengths, and are never, ever one dimensional. The humor also stands out. This book made me chuckle aloud, and that's something I look for specifically in historical romances set in this era. The love scenes are sweeter than Ms. Robinson's earlier books, but the chemistry jumps off the page and into the heart. I loved Henry, Rachel, old Pete and all the Puddlingites in the fantastic town of Puddling on the Wold.
Maggie Robinson books are fun.

Henry shares characteristics with some of her other heroes. He has been in the army six years, seen horrors, survived capture, was severely wounded, but retains a vulnerability and sweetness.

The early chapters reminded me of old Tom and Jerry cartoons when the cat keeps getting hit on the head with a frying pan but keeps on going until hit in the head with a rake.
Henry steadfastly believes he will convince the very practical Rachel to be the anchor in his out-of-control life, and deal with his tyrannical father, and find a purpose for his life. He does, of course, accomplish a happy ending while retaining his marshmallow-soft heart.

This is not a book for those looking for historical accuracy, although the odd little town where Henry is "incarcerated" to be "cured" is a bit like a kinder, gentler version of Kellogg's Battle Creek Sanitarium in operation at the time in the U.S., with emphasis on a grain-based diet and exercise.

And those looking for an alpha male asserting himself and full of testosterone rage would do better to look elsewhere. That's just not Henry's style.
